Issue with LION e-books

Hi everyone,

There's an issue with LION (Literature Online) e-books that makes them seem inaccessible---I've been in touch with the folks behind "report a problem" about it, and there isn't an immediate fix, so I thought it might be helpful for everyone to know about it.

PROBLEM: "I clicked to an e-book from a HOLLIS record, and a table of contents opened, but when I click on the chapters nothing happens."

SOLUTION A (IE and Firefox): Open up a new tab in the same window and then click on items in the table of contents. The relevant text will load in the new tab.

SOLUTION B (Chrome, recalcitrant IE and Firefox, etc):

• In the new window (the one with the table of contents in it, which opened when you clicked through from a Hollis record), type something into the search box that will be pretty specific to the book you're trying to read.
• In the results list, find the title you want and click on it.
• The book will open: most likely, you'll have the full text in a single page, which you can scroll and search. 
• At the top of this page, you'll see a "table of contents" link (the leftmost option above the author and title). If you click on that, a new window will open. Now, when you click on chapters in the new table of contents window, the appropriate text will open in the original window (the one that opened from the Hollis records).

BACKSTORY: LION likes to have two windows open when you're in its full-text collection: one small pop-up for the table of contents, and then one main window where the relevant text appears after you click on something in the table of contents. The links in HOLLIS records open up the table of contents, and, somewhere in all of the redirects that our proxy servers require, the javascript loses track of its target window. So when you click on things in the table of contents, the Javascript can't find a place to open them, and it looks like nothing has happened. The solution is to re-establish the connection between the TOC and a target window.

Note: sometimes LION uses the original Hollis window (that's displaying the record in which you clicked on the e-book link) as its target window, so it's good to keep an eye on that in case that's where the text loads.
